Since Markt opened in January of 1999—one of the earliest pioneers in the now ultra-hip Meatpacking District—the restaurant has remained true to its vision: a precise and detailed recreation of the Belgian Brasserie experience in New York . The cavernous space, with its antique marble and zinc bar, stained oak tables, engraved bar stools and beveled glass mirrors, evokes all the nuances to transport diners to Belgium. Markt's eclectic menu highlights both traditional and current Belgian food trends: Mussels and Frites, Croquettes Crevettes, Waterzooi, Steak-frites and a very well-stocked raw bar are all Markt mainstays. In its five-plus years of operation Markt has been pleased to serve such diverse celebrities and luminaries as Ralph Lauren, novelist Frank McCourt, director Mel Brooks, Harrison Ford, Bjork, The Strokes, the Clinton family and—most especially—their Royal Highnesses Prince Philippe and Princess Matilda of Belgium, during their New York visit in September of 2000.

Markt is open seven days a week. Lunch is served daily, 11:30 to 4:30 pm; dinner is served daily, 5:30 pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday, 1:00 am. Markt's very popular brunch, featuring Belgian waffles, crêpes and tartines, is served on weekends 10 am to 4:30 pm
